I’m bursting with excitement to share how I’ve organized various areas of my home! Maybe you’re in a similar space and could use some inspiration from what I’ve done. I like to think I’ve got a knack for practicality when it comes to picking furniture and organizing products. The last thing I want is to buy something just for looks without considering how it’ll function. Let’s be real, we’ve all made impulse buys that end up being a headache later on!
So, let’s dive right in! The first room I’ll tackle is our primary bedroom. I’m breaking it down into two parts, starting with drawer organization. In an upcoming blog post, I’ll share how I whipped our primary bedroom closet into shape. Stay tuned for more tips and tricks to make your space work smarter, not harder!
Choosing Practical Furniture
Let’s start with the basics. When it came to selecting furniture for our bedroom, I sought out pieces that not only looked great but also offered ample storage solutions. With a 160-square-foot space to work with, every inch counts! We have a queen-size bed flanked by two 21″ wide nightstands. I opted for a 29″ wide chair, all strategically placed along a 13-foot wall. These pieces not only fit the dimensions of the room but also provide essential storage options, ensuring a clutter-free environment.
Nightstand Essentials
Now, onto the nitty-gritty details of drawer organization. My nightstand serves as a convenient storage spot for essentials like sunglasses, eyeglasses, and my trusty wallet. While my wallet initially housed all sorts of cards and cash, I’ve since downsized to a smaller option that fits better in my daily bag. However, I’ve kept the larger wallet in the drawer as a reminder to reassess its necessity.
Similarly, my husband’s nightstand holds his go-to items, including sunglasses, a wallet, lip balm, and even an old-school address book (which may be due for a review!).
By keeping the drawers clutter-free, we’re able to easily identify items that may no longer serve a purpose in our daily routines, fostering a sense of clarity and purpose in our space.
Maximizing Dresser Space
Moving on to the dresser, I knew I needed a powerhouse of storage to house both my clothing and hubby’s. Our trusty dresser stands tall at 41 inches in height, 66 inches in width and 18 inches in depth, expanding to 20 inches in the center due to its unique design.
Despite the dresser’s unconventional dimensions, I optimized every inch with precision. Drawer organizers, ranging in size and configuration, maintain order and streamline accessibility.
Since I don’t have an extensive sock collection, I find that one of the smaller drawers suits my needs perfectly. Utilizing an organizer with multiple compartments ensures my ankle sports socks stay neatly contained, making it easy to grab the pair I want. With the organizer, I can neatly store two pairs of sports socks per compartment. Additionally, the organizer adjacent to it keeps my knee-high socks neatly organized. These drawer organizers are part of an 8-pack set.
In another drawer, I store my underwear and bras together. With ample space left in the drawer, I can also fit two pairs of my thick boot socks comfortably.
Meanwhile, hubby’s sock and underwear drawer uses a combination of dividers and organizers to accommodate thicker boot socks, sports socks, and dress socks.
I opted for a mix of drawer dividers and organizers with compartments because they offer flexibility to accommodate clothing of different widths. While drawer dividers can be adjusted to fit various sizes, organizers with compartments are perfect for specific items, preventing smaller clothing from getting lost in the shuffle. It’s all about finding the right tools to keep everything tidy and accessible!
Effortless Drawer Organization: My Preferred File-Fold Method
These drawers didn’t need any organizers simply because of how I fold my clothes, which is my go-to file-fold method. It’s super popular for a reason – it lets you see all your clothes at a glance! Take my smaller drawer, for example, where I neatly stash four sweatshirts (one’s in the laundry basket right now). Thanks to the file-fold method, my clothes practically stand on their own, no collapsing here!
In another drawer, you’ll find my work uniforms, while the next one over is dedicated to my athletic gear. My t-shirts, tank tops, and sweatpants got a boost from a larger size drawer and handy dividers. With everything neatly file-folded and compartmentalized, it’s easy peasy to grab what I need, when I need it.
In my husband’s drawer for athletic gear, this nifty drawer organizer pulls double duty! It not only keeps his athletic t-shirts neatly arranged but also acts as a handy divider, separating his shorts on the left and thermal underwear on the right. It’s like having a personal organization assistant right there in the drawer!
In the last drawer of the dresser, I’ve got my husband’s pajamas all sorted out! I used a combination of techniques to keep things tidy. File folding for all clothing, using a drawer organizer for tops and for his boxer shorts. It’s the perfect setup to easily grab what he needs when it’s time to wind down for the night!
By the way, my husband has taken to the file-folding method like a pro! It’s amazing how quickly he’s adapted, and now our organization game is stronger than ever!
Utilizing Armoire Space
In addition to the dresser, we also utilize an armoire for clothing storage.
This is where my husband’s sweaters find their cozy home, nestled neatly in fabric baskets on the shelf. Baskets are a game-changer for keeping shelves tidy. I’d much rather see three adorable baskets than a pile of sweaters in disarray any day!
Our armoire is a storage superhero, pulling double duty as both a clothing haven and a TV cabinet. It’s the perfect solution for maximizing space. And the best part? When the TV isn’t in use, we simply close the doors, and voila! The TV disappears behind them, keeping the room clutter-free and serene.
In this charming little drawer, the last of the drawer organizer set houses accessories like scarves, ties, buffs, and hair bonnets. Fun fact: Once upon a time, my husband had a hefty collection of ties for his business attire. But now that he’s moved on from that field, the collection has slimmed down significantly. For now, he’s covered but may shop for a new tie if needed.
There’s even a bit of extra space to the right of the organizer, perfect for storing belts! It’s all about making the most of every nook and cranny in our space.
Reminder: With items in plain sight, it nudges us to reassess what may need purging if outdated or unused.
The next drawer holds very little. With its shallow 3-½” height posing a challenge for bulky items. It’s ideal for my pajamas and nightgowns, where stacking works. I keep it simple, stacking just two items high for easy access to my sleepwear. This drawer also houses my husband’s white t-shirts and tanks. Although he’s trimmed down his collection and may replace them in the future. Fortunately, there’s plenty of room to spare!
In the deepest drawer, you’ll find my husband’s extensive collection of graphic t-shirts. File-folding and colour-arranging make selecting a t-shirt easy, thanks to effective drawer organization.
With careful planning and meticulous organization, every inch of our primary bedroom serves a distinct purpose. It’s our commitment to both functionality and aesthetics. Stay tuned for Part Two, where I’ll unveil my ingenious strategies for conquering closet chaos in this space!
